An ADP study of percentage of positive hits on 3,000,667 checks performed by industry in 2002, found that on average, over 40% of applicants falsified their employment and/or education credentials. Reference verifications (employment, education and/or credential reference checks) revealed a difference of information between what the applicant provided and the source reported. The highest level of falsification was found in the field of Food and Services, at 54%, followed by Manufacturing, 51%; Business Services, 49%, Health Services, 45% and Transportation, 42%.
